Barter, bargain, haggle… whatever you call it, it’s part of any market shopping experience in Thailand. There is definitely an art to it too so here are our top tips to make sure you get a fair price for yourself and the market trader:
- Barter with a beam. Smiling will go a long way in getting you a good price as well as making it a more enjoyable experience. Thailand is known as the ‘Land of Smiles’ after all so do as the locals do.
- Sometimes you’ll be happy with the original price, other times you might want to haggle over a small amount or try and get a three for two offer. If you feel the first price is overly inflated the best thing to do is start by offering 50% and work up from there until you reach a price everyone is happy with.
- Walk away. If you don’t manage to get the price you’re after, politely walk away and sometimes the trader will come after you offering the price you want. If your luck isn’t in, move on to the next stall as you’ll often find similar things throughout the market.
- We all love to get a bargain but this is their livelihood at the end of the day, so pay a fair price for both you and them!
