Thailand is synonymous with luxury hotel experiences and the country’s capital Bangkok is no exception. From luxury hotels that touch the sky, to cutting edge modern hotel design and timeless luxury on the famous Chao Phraya River, Bangkok offers a rich variety of experiences and we have asked luxury travel experts The Luxury Editor to share with us their favourite hotels in the city.
Centara Grand at CentralWorld
Located at the heart of the shopping and business area of Bangkok, the Centara Grand at Central World is great for those who enjoy the conveniences of big city life. The flasgship Centara hotel boasts 505 rooms spread across 55 storeys, most with spectacular views across the city. The 26th floor of the hotel is dedicated to the ‘Lifestyle Complex’ comprising of a fitness centre, a spa, tennis courts and an outdoor pool plus sundeck. The hotel is contemporary in design and the rooms are comfortable and stylish without too many extra frills. Guests will get to enjoy panoramic views through the enormous picture windows in all the rooms. Don’t miss their dramatic outdoor roof-top restaurant and champagne bar with an almost unbelievable outlook over Bangkok, as well as other great dining options like the ‘Uno Mas’ tapas restaurant and ‘The World’ restaurant which has a huge menu of internationally inspired dishes, from French cuisine, to Japanese sushi.
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok
This hotel has existed in some for over 140 years and holds a commanding position at the Chao Phraya River. As expected, the hotel is timeless in style; the rooms are elegant, refined with a touch of opulence characteristic to the Mandarin Oriental brand. The resort boasts nine (yes, nine!) different bars and restaurants including ‘Le Normandie’ serving French cuisine in opulent surroundings, and ‘Lord Jim’s’, a vibrant seafood restaurant with impressive river views. We highly recommend trying out their award-winning spa facility which guests access via a small boat ride across the river at the Sala Rim Nam complex. Combining traditional Thai and modern western techniques, with a holistic philosophy, this spa has treatments suitable for most peace seekers. The Siamese aesthetics of the spa are also absolutely beautiful and quite unique!
Thai culture meets contemporary luxury at The Peninsula. Rooms combine Thai-inspired design elements (teak wood, delicate carving details) with an upper-east side sophistication, creating a unique aesthetic. Not only is the décor of the hotel stunning, the attention to detail runs throughout, from their vast collection of contemporary art from over 25 South-East Asian artists scattered throughout the building, to their ‘Naturally Peninsular Garden’ in which the chef grows chemical-free herbs and vegetables to use in the various restaurants. Don’t miss out on their outdoor 3-tiered swimming pool complete with river views and traditional Thai salas for relaxing in style. Also be sure to make use of the ‘legendary’ Peninsula 24-hour room and concierge service!
W Hotel Bangkok
Described as a ‘luxury urban playground’, the W Hotel is at the centre of the action in the lively neighbourhood on North Sathorn Road in West Bangkok. The 403 vibrant guest rooms and suites all come with custom furnishings and cutting edge interior décor. Nestled amongst the modern skyscrapers, The W Hotel Bangkok offers boundary-breaking design at every turn with quirky details and artwork in abundance, like their tuk-tuk light wall, or the architecturally spectacular terrace pool. Facilities aren’t overlooked in this hotel either as it boasts a gym, spa, ‘The W Store’, various dining and drinking options and of course the pool. Party-lovers will enjoy the 7 day live music from DJs in the WOOBAR, and foodies will appreciate the brilliant selection of eateries including ‘The Kitchen Table’, a modern casual bistro and the renowned ‘House of Sathorn’ which serves up the best in Asia cuisine in a sophisticated setting. This buzzing hotel is definitely one of the movers and shakers and the socialites amongst us.
Banyan Tree Bangkok
This urban resort offers a tranquil sanctuary at the heart of the bustling city. As the city’s only 5-star all-suite hotel, you can expect luxury like no other at the Banyan Tree Bangkok. Not only is the hotel home to an award-winning space, an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by tropical plants and with stunning vistas, and a huge range of gourmet restaurants, but the rooms are all super-sized. With a warm neutral palette scattered with features of dark wood, the suites are chic and sophisticated whilst calming, really underlining that retreat like experience the Banyan focus on. The hotel may be high-rise but nothing feels false in here; Relax and alleviate the stress in their health club featuring, fully fitted gym, sauna and steam rooms as well as yoga, pilates, Muay Thai and aerobics classes, available to all guests. Guests shouldn’t miss out on their dining river cruise or sipping cocktails and enjoying 360 degree views of the city in their ‘Moon Bar’.
